CHALLENGE DETAILS: Ice Cream For Breakfast (ICFB) is GKTW’s annual awareness campaign. Launched in July in conjunction with National Ice Cream Month, ICFB encourages individuals, corporations and communities to host and attend ice cream socials to raise awareness and funds for GKTW. At GKTW, families are served complimentary all-you-can-eat ice cream in the “Village’s” infamous Ice Cream Palace each and every day. In a place where parents never have to say “no,” the Palace is open from early in the morning until late at night, so everyone can enjoy ice cream whenever they want—even for breakfast.

The ICFB campaign (http://www.icecreamforbreakfast.org) was launched two years ago in hopes that it will become a $1 million fundraiser by Year Five. So far, the campaign has only raised one tenth of what's needed. The concept behind ICFB is fairly simple: Host an ice cream social at your home, workplace or community center and ask your guests to make a donation to GKTW (usually $5 per person). Virtual scoops of hope could also be purchased on www.icecreamforbreakfast.org for $5. How can we help promote this campaign to the general public to reach our targeted goal of $1 million in 2014?

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW: Give Kids The World Village (GKTW) is a 70-acre, "storybook" resort in Central Florida where children with life-threatening illnesses and their families are treated to a weeklong, cost-free fantasys vacations.     The Lyons Clubs, Eastern Star, Red Hat Society & Masonic organizations are all about philanthropy. They exist to help others.

    Ask them to host Ice Cream Socials to fund the project.

    You'll have hundreds of local chapters, each with it's own audience or market or following....
    all who love to participate in an event, especially if it involves helping others.

    You've got a great idea and while grass roots is a great place to start, the only way to truly raise the awareness of the event and get the participation necessary to reach your goals is to get other organizations involved to help you meet your goals.

    This could become an annual event for one or more of the large organizations which could raise a lot more than what you originally hoped.

    I was looking at the website for the Give Kids The Village and didn't see your annual
    Ice Cream for Breakfast campaign anywhere.

    It should be prominent on the web sites first page. Not a foot note on some
    hidden page.

    The campaign needs to be visible to succeed. Even though it's an "annual campaign" promoting it is key
    and if you want larger organizations to take part in it you need to make the info available through the main web page
    all year long because you never know when the "right person" will see it and want to help promote it.

    Contact the Boy Scouts, The Girl Scouts, the YMCA and YWCA to help promote and even host the events. There, you have a "captive" audience that loves to help others and that has built in marketing.

    2) Contact Facebook directly and ask if they could sell virtual scoops of ice cream. The proceeds would go to your organization and the person buying them would receive a link to post to their page which states they helped your organization, info about your charity AND a link to where others could donate to receive a scoop as well.

    Contact a company like Baskin Robins to sponsor an event at each of their locations where .50 or $1 from every purchase in a given day is donated o your charity.

    Ask the National Ice Cream Retail Association www.nicra.org to help sponsor your fundraising events through direct donations or through advertising your campaign.


    Create a public service announcement and ask all the public TV and radio stations, cable & satellite companies, college radio stations & local cable public stations such as Access Sacramento to run the ads. In the ads you can promote the fundraiser idea and even ask for direct support.

    Ask a children's book publisher or author to help promote the events.

    Ask the cartoon network for assistance.

    What if you set up an agenda for the breakfast that suggests hosts do a few other steps along with the collection of dollars and the making of ice-cream. For example, ask each attendee to post on their Facebook where they are and challenge their friends to have their own ICFB event. Another suggestion is ask each person to bring an extra $1 for a 50-50 drawing - the winner gets half the money and the other half gets added to the ICFB total. Maybe a brief education period on the agenda to raise awareness of who they are helping and why, to make champions out of attendees.

    Not quite sure if this would work over in the States however over here in the UK probably the best way to target parents of young families is through school.
    A mailshot to schools asking them to raise awareness with parents (or host an event) would be a very direct way to approach this, the other would be through other bodies who interact with schools. Over here in the UK we have professional photography firms who visit the school once or twice a year to take a formal "school photo" of your child. If that happens in the US I wonder if they would sponsor or promote ICFB in the literature they send home to parents?

      Thanks for posting your idea, Adrian! I wonder if it would be possible to also have a national or regional ice cream sponsor of the literature, such as a Ben & Jerry's. They could potentially pay for the print costs and offer a coupon for ice cream. Or they could set a date and host an ice cream for breakfast event in their shops to raise awareness for Give Kids the World Village.

      That would certainly fit nicely with the Ben & Jerry ethos. The other route may be through a venue that supplies ice cream as part of their menu and are child friendly, Wendy's for example, or a chain of food stores who sell ice cream. Probably lends itself to one of the smaller ethically minded organisations I guess.
